Fathers and flexibility green shoots of positive change

Fathers and flexibility green shoots of positive change This Father’s Day, we talk to FlexCareers co-founder and father of three Joel McInnes about why there’s never been a better time to be a father, how having kids changed his work life priorities and what more he thinks needs to be done to normalise flexibility for everyone. How much progress do you see being made for fathers in the workplace when it comes to flexibility? Thankfully flexible work for fathers is becoming more acceptable. It’s still early days, but we’re definitely seeing green shoots of positive change. Even though there’s more work to be done, I believe there’s never been a better time to be a father. In many families both parents are now genuinely able to contribute equally to their children’s upbringing. Flexibility leaders such as Lion have adopted all-roles-are-flexible policies. And more and more organisations like Diageo are offering equivalent parental leave for both men and women. Not only do we know men want flexibility, but we know why too. Our Annual Workplace Flexibility Report 2019 found the top two reasons why are to improve work life balance and also improve mental wellbeing. Essentially, you can boil the data down into one central idea men as much as women desire flexible work as a way to improve personal wellness. What are your own personal experiences of juggling fatherhood and work? I spent the first part of my career in investment banking where flexible work wasn’t even on my radar. You don’t miss what you don’t know and I was happy working crazy hours. I was married but didn’t have kids at that time. But having a family certainly changes your priorities. You want to spend time with your children, build strong relationships and be there for them when they need you. Flexible work for me is about fitting work in around what really matters â€" my family. I can now have breakfast with my kids and take them to school. I now start work later in the morning but I’m happy to catch up once they’re in bed. Is there still a huge discrepancy between the way mothers and fathers are treated by employers?   Yes, there is. But that’s not surprising given the two main drivers of this discrepancy â€" historical context and attitudes, and government policies. The main government parental leave scheme for fathers for example only provides two weeks off at minimum wage. Achieving a 50:50 split of caring in aggregate may be an unrealistic societal goal but when only one in 20 dads takes primary parental leave there’s still a lot more to be done. Not only that but the current system sees women 20 times more likely to miss out on both a year’s worth of earnings and also a year of superannuation. To bring the average woman’s final super balance up to the same level as her average male equivalent, we somehow need to increase it by  72%. How far have we come from the early days of flex when the conversation was purely about return to work mums? When Marko and I started FlexCareers, the flexibility conversation with employers was all about women. That’s changed. Now it’s flexibility for everyone gender is only one of a number of issues driving it. And finally, what more do you think needs to be done to normalise flexibility in the workplace? There’s no silver bullet. It’s like the old question of how to eat an elephant? One bite at a time. We need a portfolio approach that sees flexibility as part of DI, wellbeing and the future of work. And we need to move away from the perception that flexibility is just a nice thing to do towards more hard dollar cost benefit analyses. We need to let data inform our strategies and turn solutions into tight business cases. Ultimately the financial productivity benefits of flexibility in addition to the wellness benefits â€" for organisations and individuals regardless of gender â€" are huge. Thanks Joel and we hope you had a fab Father’s Day.

Office Design Ideas For Burning The Midnight Oil

Office Design Ideas For Burning The Midnight Oil There is no rest for the universes of business, fund and exchange. Furthermore, for what reason ought to there be, the point at which we have programming and innovation that permits us to work constantly. Literally, the world is presently working nonstop, the entire day and night like never before in mankind's history. At the point when you have such a great amount of help from programming and coordinated interfaces, you can connect all the phases of business together without a moment's delay. Business structures are currently completely used to having laborers go all through the premises during the night. Actually representatives that work during the night are similarly as occupied as laborers during the day, though with somewhat less weight. They can get the show on the road for the next morning or simply keep it moving from the past night. As a business chief, ask yourself how you are making an adaptable situation that permits workers to consume the 12 PM oil and not feel as thoug h they are caught in an office throughout the night. This is significant in light of the fact that daytime has finished and albeit the majority of the world it appears is snoozing, they're completely wakeful and attempting to complete ordinary work. Waterproofing light Espresso is the fuel of the business world. At the point when you're plunking down gazing at a PC screen, examining insights of the world economy, searching for examples and gauges being met in the marketing projections, going over agreement terms and conditions, satisfying new requests and fixing client objections throughout the night, you will require a new cup of Joe. Getting up and setting off to the kitchen territory or espresso machine to get yourself a new portion of caffeine shouldn't be loaded with any peril. Be that as it may, there is, on the grounds that its dim and for the most part, representatives won't keep the roof lights on the off chance that they're working late around evening time. A waterproof LED apparatus directly finished, underneath or along the edge of the espresso zone would roll out a major improvement. They can be enacted by a sensor and inhale simply enough light onto the region whereby a representative can perceive what they're doing. This is clearly d one so bubbling heated water isn't spilled late into the evening. Easygoing sitting zone Present day workplaces have territories for their representatives to sit and unwind during the day when the pressure gets excessively. This is such a great amount of better to have in your office than to permit pressure and strain to defeat your staff. Anyway individuals would prefer not to turn on the fundamental amazing lights in a room around evening time, they need sufficiently only to perceive what's happening around them. Also, representatives like put their feet and rest their bottoms so placing a light on a table in the seating territory won't work out. A cubix arrangement LED table has lights fixed underneath the surface and all around the base so you can undoubtedly observe the size of it when its dull. These durable yet truly popular tables are extraordinary for daytime use just as the night. In the event that you need to remain in front of the opposition, at that point you have to have more representatives working during the night. In any case, since they're working the night move doesn't mean the ordinary office life ought to need to change.

Job Seekers Guide to LinkedIn Recruiter Search - Jobscan Blog

Occupation Seekers Guide to LinkedIn Recruiter Search - Jobscan Blog Posted on November 27, 2018May 15, 2019 by Jon Shields Answering to a vocation posting isnt the best way to get a new line of work. Selection representatives for organizations enormous and little are continually searching for the opportune individuals to improve their groups, regardless of whether those individuals are work looking. This occurs on LinkedIn more than anyplace else, which means perhaps the most ideal approaches to get an advantage in your pursuit of employment is to compose aLinkedIn profile that assists selection representatives with discovering you. LinkedIn offers apparatuses that empower enrollment specialists to reveal ability. Seeing how these apparatuses work causes you make a LinkedIn profile that enrollment specialists will discover. In this article, well investigate four different ways searches, channels, and perspectives work withinLinkedIn Recruiterfrom the point of view of employment searchers. 1) A selection representatives first look In 2012, the Ladders distributed a compelling investigation where the eye developments of selection representatives were followed as they looked into resumes. The investigation found that practically 80% of their resume survey time was spent taking a gander at the accompanying data: Name Current title, organization, and residency Past titles, organizations, and residencies Training LinkedIn Recruiter affirms this is the thing that selection representatives care about most when performing introductory screenings. As scouts start including channels and review applicants, LinkedIn shows a basic breakdown of every competitor comprised of: Name Photograph Feature Current title, organization, and residency Past titles, organizations, and residencies Instruction Your photograph and feature are the main things in this view you have absolute authority over as an applicant. Utilize an expert looking headshot andwrite a hearty and one of a kind LinkedIn feature that will empower you to hang out in these perspectives. Name, photograph, feature, present place of employment, past occupations, training. 2) Standard pursuit fields and channels The selection representatives default choices for looking and separating candidates incorporate employment titles, areas, abilities, organizations, year of graduation, schools, enterprises, and watchwords. They can blend and match these fields or search numerous qualities one after another so as to reveal their optimal competitor. These are the standard pursuit fields and channels inside LinkedIn Recruiter Lite. A couple of things to note in these areas: Employment titles This field auto-populates with the most widely recognized activity titles as the enrollment specialist starts composing. For instance, on the off chance that they type Customer Service, it shows alternatives for Customer Service Representative, Customer Service Specialist, etc. Spotters commonly incline toward somebody who has carried out the responsibility previously, so theyll target explicit employment titles. Guarantee that your feature and work experience incorporates customary titles for the work youve been doing if your past occupations dont mirror that. Its OK to alter your activity titles to represent this. For instance, on the off chance that you held an ambiguously named job that didnt catch where you invested the vast majority of your energy, use brackets to include extra setting just as populate your profile with work titles applicable to your pursuit of employment. On the off chance that your official employment title was Marketing Associate however you had some expertise in a couple specific zones, you may numbers to be added it with (Social Media Coordinator, Content Specialist). In the event that you mistreat your activity title, approach it from a point of view of including lucidity as opposed to boosting your qualifications. Trustworthiness is significant here. Areas LinkedIn possibly expects you to indicate a nation while making a record. Enrollment specialists will quite often be sifting their quests by area, so by including your postal district and determining a geographic zone (like Seattle, Washington or Greater Seattle Area), you put yourself in the method of exponentially more inquiries. Abilities These are thehard and delicate abilities found all through your profile. While it may not appear to be instinctive, the rundown of abilities in your Skills and Endorsements profile segment isn't sufficient to rank profoundly in LinkedIn Recruiter aptitudes look. Aptitudes found in the work understanding, feature, rundown, and different segments are really weighted all the more intensely in search. All things considered, selection representatives need to know the setting in which you gained and built up an ability. Ensure you top aptitudes can be found all through your profile. Jobscans LinkedIn Optimization device encourages you see the most significant and effective aptitudes that are absent from your profile. 3) Advanced hunt fields and channels LinkedIn Recruiter likewise gives various propelled search choices. Propelled search alternatives accessible in LinkedIn Recruiter Lite. Other Recruiter bundles offer significantly more choices. Postal district Enrollment specialists can channel their quests dependent on closeness to postal district. On the off chance that you live outside of the city yet are acclimated with or ready to drive 25 or more miles to work, it may be helpful to enter the postal district of the downtown area as opposed to your home. A similar rationale applies on the off chance that you are effectively arranging a transition to another zone. Military veterans Regardless of whether a scout has an individual inclination for ex-military or their organization has an activity to employ more veterans, anybody with a military foundation can profit by this channel. In any case, essentially referencing in your LinkedIn synopsis that youre a veteran wont add you to the rundown. Include your military experience as a component of your Work Experience area. Youll possibly be in the running for these hunts on the off chance that you select the official part of the military. My gatherings In certain cases, scouts may discover more excellent applicants inside particular LinkedIn gatherings. For instance, a spotter that works in the computer game industry may be an individual from and search inside the Game Developers gathering, or an enrollment specialist looking for a military veteran may look inside the Veteran Mentor Network gathering. Join bunches applicable to your vocation goals. Remember that the spotters can see all the gatherings and organizations you follow on your profile. Dont join gatherings or follow organizations that could cast you in a poor light. 4) Career interests and LinkedIn Recruiter The above bits of knowledge depended on LinkedIn Recruiter Lite. LinkedIn additionally offers progressively powerful (and costly) bundles with much more pursuit choices and bits of knowledge. Round out your Career advantages A portion of these bundles incorporate extra competitor channels and bits of knowledge dependent on how you round out yourCareer Interests segment. make certain to refresh this area if youre work looking. Its found on your profile dashboard between your fundamental information and work understanding. Access the Career Interests segment underneath your vocation rundown on your profile. In this segment, you can demonstrate to selection representatives that youre open to being reached, leave a note, include pursuit of employment subtleties, work titles of intrigue, extra areas, sorts of business, ventures, organization size, and that's only the tip of the iceberg. Test Career Interests area found in the LinkedIn Profile. Rounding out this area makes you qualified for extra channels. It additionally includes identifications (known as Spotlights) to your profile in an enrollment specialists search, for example, Open to new chances or Open to move. Scouts get extra experiences and outlines when they drift over these identifications. Drifting over the Open to new open doors identification shows your own note to spotters and other data found in the Career Interests area. Connect on LinkedIn Another approach to draw additional consideration on LinkedIn Recruiter search is to interface with LinkedIn in vital manners. Sign in to LinkedIn routinely. Extend your system to expand the quantity of first-, second-, and third-degree associations among you and selection representatives or individuals at target organizations. Follow target organizations and associate with their substance. This will assist you with procuring identifications like Likely to react, Company associations, or Engaged with Your Talent Brand. You cannot know everything, and the greater part of the hunt assignments I get from managers who are searching for increasingly junior-l evel ability have a particular need or a particular business issue to comprehend. They should attempt to spend significant time in a certain something, get great at it and afterward begin pondering adding as far as anyone is concerned base. How did you get into this specialty of recruiting?I began as a spotter in direct showcasing somewhere in the range of 25 years back. Moving into advanced promoting and eCommerce was a characteristic change for me since its everything about showcasing direct to the consumer. What are bosses truly looking for?Companies have never confronted so much vulnerability and hazard. In the space of just a couple of months, they can slip from showcase pioneer to devotee. The capacity to manage significant changes in the working environment, complete activities with next to no bearing, suffer pressure, handle different needs these are among the abilities that businesses search for in all experts, paying little heed to the business theyre in. Be that as it may, this applies particularly to computerized advertising. What may have been viewed as an insane thought one day may be the following days most foreseen analyze. Organizations can test new thoughts and evaluate new highlights on sites and get practically quick outcomes. All organizations need their advertisers to be versatile, however in advanced showcasing that is particularly significant on the grounds that the main thing that doesnt change iswell, change. Anticipate that change should be the standard. Figure out how to adjust and you will remain a stage ahead. What exhortation do you have for the baffled activity seeker?Network, organize, arrange! One of the wonders of computerized innovation is that applicants nowadays have a lot a bigger number of roads for systems administration than their forerunners did only five years back. Additionally, be open with regards to area. There are a lot of magnificent open doors in places outside of the significant metro zones. In the event that yo u limit your hunt to a particular geographic territory, expect less opportunities. How has the activity advertise changed in the course of recent years or somewhere in the vicinity, and where do you see it going in the following not many years? The employing process has been loosened up a great deal. Ten years back, my normal pursuit, from the underlying call from the business to the up-and-comers first day at work, for the most part didnt last over two months. Presently, a quarter of a year is the standard. Some portion of that is on the grounds that businesses have gotten substantially more specific. Many are searching for that purple squirrel, and some might as well let a position stay vacant in the event that they cannot discover it.What does an advanced promoting work competitor need to stand out?Attitude is number one. Managers need to employ an applicant who will be self-roused. You can have all the aptitudes on the planet, however in the event that you dont show energy or exci tement, you wont get very far!How should a competitor handle different employment offers? Its hard to give a sweeping reaction to that. Relies upon the offers, relies upon the planning, relies upon a great deal of things. Everyones circumstance is unique. However, various offers are something to be thankful for on the grounds that it gives you a decision. You have to have great exchange aptitudes to explore through them. I take an extremely dreary view towards tolerating counter-offers.How have you seen the job of ladies in this industry change? Its changed a lot. In advanced showcasing all in all, I work with the same number of ladies now as I do with men, despite the fact that men despite everything overwhelm the more senior-level eCommerce jobs. Im setting a greater number of ladies into specialized situations than I ever have previously, and theyre likewise speaking to an expanding level of the up-and-comers I place in the corner office, as VPs and CMOs. Truth be told, Ive set TWO ladies into CMO jobs only this year, more than during any year before!

What to do when you Fancy a Change of Career - Freesumes

What to do when you Fancy a Change of Career What to do when you Fancy a Change of Career Changing careers is a scary thing, but if you are desperate to leave your current job and itching to try something new â€" a change of career can be just what you need! The world of work is an ever evolving thing and more people than ever are switching careers three or maybe four times or more in their lifetime. In fact, according to a Harris survey for the University of Phoenix in Arizona, nearly 80 percent of workers in their 20s said they wanted to change careers, followed by 64 percent of 30-somethings and 54 percent in their 40s. (source)Here we take a look at some reasons for wanting a career change and what you should consider before making a move. Quite often the desire to change direction is so strong that it outweighs all the negatives. Sometimes all you need is a positive attitude to make that change regardless of how under-qualified or inexperienced you are in your desired role.Do you really want to leave? There is a big difference between wanting a change of career b ecause you want to learn something new or need to be challenged and using a career change as an excuse to escape an unhappy workplace. Do you really want to change direction completely just because you may not like your boss, the people you work with or the company?Using a career change as an escape route may seem like the easy way out, but it could actually be much easier to try and fix your current situation first. If you have issues with your boss or work colleagues, then you should talk to your HR department who are there to help you deal with situations such as this. Try to do a repair job before you burn your bridges. If you find that nothing has changed in six months time, then you can say that you tried your best. Your decision to change direction could be better justified then. What about money? You should always consider your finances before jumping ship. If you have become used to a certain wage and are comfortable earning the level of salary you currently get, then it coul d be a big shock to the system to take a considerable pay cut. Changing careers may often result in having to accept a lower salary, especially if you are entering a new field with very little experience under your belt. If you are happy to start again from the bottom, try to be financially prepared for the change. You may look at trimming your expenses and outgoings, or giving yourself a year to save as much money as possible to tide you over during your transition. You could even look for ways to boost your income, such as a weekend job or a sideline you can run from home in the evenings.Talk your way into a better salaryYou may be coming at your new career a little older and wiser than some of the other recruits. You should take a little time to evaluate what positive attributes you can offer in your new role. Your new employer may appreciate that you bring with you transferable skills and experience that others dont have. This can be an asset that you can use to negotiate a h igher wage, especially if they are looking for more mature candidates to manage a team of younger workers. How well you communicate your skill-set to your new employer will be the key to you standing out from the rest. No matter what your previous background, if you can bring something valuable to your new role that others lack, then you will be earmarked for extra responsibilities or promotion that can bring you a higher salary. What do I want to do, really? You may be so over your current career that it bores you to tears to have to go to work every day. However, figuring out exactly what you want to do next can be a bit of a puzzle.   Your dream job may be out there, but how do you know what it is? There may be a perfect job for you where you can utilise your skills, but would you really enjoy doing it? Obviously, there is more to a role than its job title. When you spot an opportunity that looks appealing to you, make sure you check out all the factors. Read the role description . What may appear perfect on the surface may not be quite what you thought when you dig a little deeper.Evaluate everything. You may find that your skill-set perfectly matches the job specifications and the company looks very attractive. But what about that 2-hour commute every day? Isnt your long commute one of the most frustrating things about your current job? The new role mentions that you will be working on your own â€" but you are more comfortable being a team player. Would you really be happy stuck in a tiny office all by yourself? Maybe this job isnt as perfect as you thought.ConclusionChanging career doesnt mean you have to quit your job and jump into something else immediately. It takes time to decide what you actually want to do with your life, analyse each opportunity open to you, figure out what transferable skills you can take with you to your new career and planning for your change in finances. previous article
